Advantages of using energy storage batteries to store electricity


The energy storage battery has the widest range of applications and most benefits compared to other storage technologies. Batteries are used in portable electronics, electric utility energy storage, renewable energy storage, and more. The use of the batteries leads to savings through avoiding or reducing costs as well as generating income from the excess energy.

As commercial and consumer interests build up in the stand-alone and grid interactive renewable energy systems, the energy storage battery has become one of the mostly used storage medium.The energy storage battery compensates for power mismatches between the renewable output power, and the desired power. Energy is stored during the peak-production and low-usage hours such as during the day for solar. 

The stored energy is used later when the renewable sources are low or not available at all. The energy storage battery therefore allows for the efficient production and consumption of the renewable power, and covers up for deficiencies while the extra energy can be fed into the grid for income.

The energy storage batteries are also used to smooth out the peaks and troughs in the intermittent renewable energy from the wind and solar. 

Energy storage battery for residential and commercial UPS and power inverter systems


Energy storage batteries are also used in Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) and inverters to provide backup power to critical applications, thereby avoiding interruptions due to utility power fluctuations and outages. Even with a generator, a UPS or inverter is required to provide backup power to maintain the load during the short interval between the power failure and the time the generator comes up to power the load.The inverters provide greater outputs and require higher energy storage battery capacity compared to the UPSs.

The energy storage battery systems can be deployed at various stages of the grid or off-grid power systems, either at the generation, transmission, distribution or consumption level. The storage system may be used for reasons such as;

  • Enable self consumption for both off-grid and grid connected renewable energy and allow excess energy to be fed and sold to the utility companies through the feed-in tariffs.
